It's spring in New Zealand and as my first ever swarm arrived, I was rather close-up to all the action! A dozen or so scout bees had been checking out the bee boxes I had placed out on my deck for the last week but the weather had been cold and windy. The sun was out today and it was warm so I was keeping a close watch on them. Just before noon the bees all vanished so I suspected something was about to happen. I grabbed my old (but trusty) Canon PowerShot pocket camera and put on my sun-hat just in time to watch the swarm fly in. Did I get stung? No - these bees were in swarm mode so were only focused on moving into their new hive. Having watched so many videos from the likes of "Mr Ed", "628 Dirt Rooster", "JP the Bee Man" and closer to home "The Bush Bee Man", I knew I would be safe. An hour later the field bees were heading out to forage and the large drone bees were off to find queens. I did put a second box on top with some more frames a few hours later and found the first box was around half full, but once the field bees returned it would have been rather packed.
